Create ‘Curry-nary’ Cuisine in Comfort

Curry is a dish that most of us in the UK enjoy but few of us are actually daring enough cook for ourselves.  To help give you some flavourful inspiration in the kitchen we have found straightforward and tasty curry recipes to help to create perfect Indian cuisine at home.

Jaime Oliver provides the recipe for all curry novices- Curry base sauce. You can add the meat or vegetables of your choice and as Jaime suggests freeze the sauce so it is always there when you want a curry in a hurry.

If cooking a curry from scratch is new to you then why not try a completely different curry dish? Meen curry is a spicy fish dish that tastes delicious.

Chicken korma one of the nations favourite curry dishes is also simple and easy to make, but don’t just take our word for it give the recipe a go.

Or, if you are feeling a little bit braver in the kitchen try Brian Turner’s onion bhaji recipe. They compliment any curry and they are also a great snack to enjoy with a glass of ice cold Cobra beer.

Curry is good for you!

There’re have been a few stories in the media recently about how good curry is for you  – as if you needed another reason to pop out to your local curry house this weekend! There are in fact other benefits to munching on a Daal and a Vindaloo than just feeling full and content afterwards!

As well as making taste buds tingle, curry spices are known to have several health benefits which makes curry ideal for enjoying with family or friends when cooked well. There are five main spices used to prepare most curries – each with their own set of health benefits.

Turmeric:

Also known as Curcumin, Tumuric gives curry its vibrant yellow colour. It also has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties – detoxifying the liver, is said to help ease the follow: symptoms of arthritis, reducing nervous tension, boosting the metabolic function and fighting depression.

Caraway:

Caraway has long been called a ‘cure-all’ and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It supposedly boosts the immune system, soothes irritated skin and when combined with olive oil it can even relieve bronchitis, colds, toothache, eye infections, sore throats and apparently can ward off cancer!

Cardamom:

Cardamom is another wonder spice that contains the antioxidant Cineole which is said to detoxify the liver, strengthen the immune system and calm nerves. It’s can also be used to fight kidney and stomach cancer and treat digestive problems, asthma and urinary tract infections.

Clove:

Clove, also has antioxidant, is said to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is often used as pain relief for toothaches, joint pain and sore throats – slightly different to popping an Ibruprofen in your mouth!

Fennel:

This seed contains several important antioxidants as well as fibre, folate, potassium and vitamin C. All of which supposedly help reduce blood pressure and strengthen your immune system.

So next time you need an excuse to hit your local curry house, just think of all the good you’ll be doing your body!

We’d like to thank Akash Tandoori in Southfields (London) for helping us bring you this insight into the health benefits of curry.

Two for One curry at Ishta!

What a mid-week treat! I went for a great night out at Ishta restaurant in Manchester yesterday to take advantage of Cobra Beer’s brilliant Ruby Wednesday offer. It’s a great restaurant with fantastic staff, a lovely atmosphere and some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. But what’s really important is the offer itself. What brilliant value: 2 for 1 curry! Plus, because there was an odd number of us eating, we decided to get an extra main to share, just because we had one “free” with the offer. Fantastic stuff.

And for all you technophobes out there, it’s dead easy to get the special Cobra code: all you have to do is put your details into the Cobra website, they send you the code and present that at the restaurant, and Bob’s your uncle. 2 for 1 curry. How good is that?!

Cobra is a great beer and now they’re taking their brilliance into the world of great value curry. I’ll be taking advantage of this again at Ishta, as well as exploring the other restaurants. I’ve let all my mates know – I’m sure they’ll let all their mates know too. An absolutely brilliant deal – thanks Cobra.

Cinnamon Tree Review

My boyfriend took me for a night out last week to the Cinnamon Tree in Manchester. He’d heard of the Ruby Wednesday 2 for 1 curry offer and used Cobra Beer’s Curry Finder to locate our nearest curry house participating in the offer. We’ve recently moved house so money’s a little tight, but this was well within our budget, especially with the awesome 2 for 1 deal. We’d never been to the Cinnamon Tree before and, to be honest, we’re not massive curry fans. But we were wonderfully surprised because the restaurant itself was really nice and the food was brilliant with a lot of variety. We also tried Cobra for the first time and loved that too. It was all-round a really, really great night out. We’ll definitely be trying it again.

Ruby Wednesdays at Asia Lounge in Bury

Asia Lounge Bury

The other half and I went for a night out to The Asia Lounge to celebrate my birthday last Saturday night. We decided to take advantage of the curry offer from Cobra Beer, and it only gave us more to celebrate. The offer is fantastic value for money and there’s plenty of variety to choose from on Asia Lounge’s menu. I like my currys nice and spicy but she prefers them a bit milder and both our tastes were catered to.

The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated – very modern and chic – and the service is absolutely is second-to-none. The waiters there really know their stuff and they were happy to advise my wife on the perfect dish for her when she couldn’t quite make up her mind what she wanted. We left feeling really well looked after – not to mention full up!

The Asia Lounge is simply one of the best restaurants I have ever been to; beautiful surroundings, tasty food and a great offer to top it all off. I’ll definitely be recommending both the restaurant and the offer to all my friends in the future. Thanks Ruby Wednesdays!

Voujon Restaurant – Ruby Wednesdays 2 for 1 Curry

Voujon Restaurant

Voujon Restaurant

I’ve lived in Manchester all my life and have been to pretty much every curry house and Indian restaurant the town has to offer. I go for a curry at least once a week and so was delighted to see advertised in the Manchester Evening News the Ruby Wednesday offer from Cobra Beer. Cobra tastes great with a curry – I drink it every time I have one, so it’s great to see such an offer appearing.

The restaurant itself was really good – the interior is very modern and chic and an absolute pleasure to dine in – and the food was absolutely top notch.  They’ve got everything at the Voujon and both my boyfriend and I tucked into a nice, hot dish before washing it down with some Cobra. A top, top night out – so thanks Cobra; Ruby Wednesday is an absolute winner!

Review: Mango, Brick Lane

A few weeks ago we hosted the 10th Annual Cobra Brick Lane festival at the Vibe bar on Brick Lane.  It was a fantastic day with four amazing restaurants all showing off their best dishes.  My personal favourite of these was Mango, right in the heart of Brick Lane, so I thought it was about time I headed down and tried out a whole mean for myself.

I headed down to the restaurant with some friends and asked for them to bring us a selection of their house favourites and a couple of Cobra beers.  We spent just 20 minutes nibbling on some poppadoms with some cracking chutneys, admiring the stylish restaurant before the below feast appeared.  And feast it was!  We had to sit on two separate tables!  In total we had 9 different dishes consisting of: Bolloywood Blast, Goshte Hara, Simsima (Sea Bass), Mango Delight, Chicken Tikka Mossala, Tarka Dall, Bendi Bajee, Rice, Garlic Chilly Nan, and finally a Pesware Nan….

Mango at Brick Lane

As you can see it looks terrific.  The food was incredible.  We asked the waiters which one was their favourite and each one liked something different and for good reason – each of the dishes were totally different, but totally delicious! We went round each one starting at the mildest and working our way up to the hottest and determined that we had three favourites, Bolloywood Blast, Goshte Hara, and Simsima.  They were all completely different, the sea bass was creamy and pack full of subtle flavours, the prawns succulent and spicy whist the chicken pack enough heat to keep it interesting but not blow your head off!  We loved every mouthful, especially when washed down with an ice cold Cobra beer!!

So if you’re heading to Brick Lane, maybe on a curry safari, then you should certainly make a visit to the fantastic Mango!

Thanks to Shimu for organising such a feast!

Zouk Tea Bar & Grill Restaurant Review Manchester

I saw the Cobra Beer Ruby Wednesday 2 for 1 ad online and immediately signed up for my voucher code. What a bargain 2 for 1 curry and all I have to do is buy a Cobra Beer. I instantly got a text message with a following one which listed the nearest Indian restaurants to me. Perfect. I went down to Zouk’s Tea Bar & Grill in Manchester which is just off Oxford Road opposite the BBC. The restaurant looks very nice from the outside and is even nicer inside. It has a modern and light design and there was a good view of the kitchen from our table. There is a good selection of curries from meat to vegetarian and lots of tasty starters to choose from. An evening at an Indian restaurant isn’t complete without some popadoms to start off with. The condiments were really tasty, a little different and presented well. The service was excellent and the waiters were very attentive and accommodating. I had a Chicken Jalfrezi as main course with Nan bread and rice. Absolutely stunning and the Cobra Beer was the perfect drink to go with my meal. I loved the dinner and would recommend Ruby Wednesdays to everyone!

Ruby Wednesday at Cinnamon Lounge in Oldham

I’ve been taking a cookery course recently and this week we’re learning how to make the perfect curry. I was looking online for a good Indian restaurant to visit so I could taste what the professionals can come up with and came across the site for Cobra Beer and the 2 for 1 curry Ruby Wednesday offer. I automatically filled in all my details, got the code back, grabbed my girlfriend and shot off to my nearest participating restaurant – the Cinnamon Lounge, thanks to Cobra’s curry finder for giving me that info – and got stuck in.

The food was absolutely gorgeous – clearly I’ve got a lot to live up to – and Rachel enjoyed hers too. She’s into spicier dishes than I am and was really impressed by the flavour. My milder dish was brilliant and we both left really happy. The restaurant had a really nice atmosphere and a great ambiance, which only added to a great night out. So thanks Cobra! Great value and lots of vital tips picked up!

The Last Monsoon in Manchester

What a restaurant this is! I love it! So imagine how made up I was when I heard that Cobra’s brilliant 2 for 1 Curry offer was coming to Manchester and the Last Monsoon. It’s a fantastic offer and it’s so good that The Last Monsoon got to be a part of it. This place is a great place to enjoy a Friday night out in. Great food and great service. It’s just perfect and it’s good to think that the Ruby Wednesday offer will bring people into the place and give it a much-deserved boost in business.  I will be recommending the Cobra Beer’s offer (and the Last Monsoon) to everyone I know. 2 for 1 currys are always for the win, and that’s the brilliance of Ruby Wednesday. Keep it coming Cobra! You’re the best!
